Egypt is one of the most fascinating destinations in the world! It holds the incredible Pyramids of Giza, monumental temples & over 91 million people! I fell in love so much I got a lasting imprint from Egypt, my Egyptian tattoo.
I wouldn’t go there.. This was the main response received when I said I was going to Egypt. Let me jump right in and say, I went, I would again and would encourage anyone to go.
Would I tell you to go if there is unrest in the streets, no, I wouldn’t tell you to go anywhere that is putting your life in immediate danger. But if you have considered and crossed Egypt off your list let me ask you the simple question, why?
My time in Egypt had its ups and downs, such is life anyway. But overall, it was amazing and I wanted to kick and scream when I had to leave Dahab, the last stop on my two week Egyptian trip.
A traveler generally wouldn’t go to Egypt and not visit Cairo. It is an unbelievably populated, buzzing city. The population of Cairo is about half of my country’s population! It is where I had the best falafel of my life, the first time I rode a camel and visited the iconic Pyramids of Giza. The traffic is something I had never seen before. Honking the horn was a form of switching lanes, saying hello to people and road rage all at the same time. If you’re going to go to Egypt, you should not just have Cairo on the list though. There are plenty of beautiful sights to see and as mentioned, Dahab is a must do.
My trip also included Aswan, Valley of the Kings, Luxor and a night on a felucca (non-motorised boat) on the Nile River and the third time mentioned, Dahab. I won’t go into detail on my phone being pick-pocketed (so no phone for 3 weeks), getting stalked, no females around for two weeks and a train strike where plans changed to sitting on a bus for 18 hours.
Temples & Artwork
Many temples? Yes, the temples in Egypt are like the churches in Europe, plentiful and can be too many for some. But you have to do it! They are incredible and huge! Temples are sacred places in the times where Gods and Goddesses were worshiped. The carvings and drawings are delicate timelines representing the social structure including the pharaohs, peasants and slaves.
One symbol with the drawings kept catching my attention and it was everywhere, the key of life. I read a quote once by Hannah Arendt:
“Loving life is easy when you are abroad. Where no one knows you and you hold your life in your own hands all alone, you are more master of yourself than at any other time.”
This statement is one I can heavily relate to. Whenever I travel solo I know my family and gals are not a five minute drive away or even a 10 hour flight away. So to think that I am the master of my own life is a scary but liberating thought at the same time. The more I saw the key of life symbol in the drawings and would hear what it represented to the Egyptians, made me want to literally hold the key to my life. I knew I couldn’t walk around with a key in my hand like they did. So I had my key stamped on my wrist.
This tattoo gives great meaning to me – that I will make choices and live my life as I see fit. It’s a reminder when I look at it, that I have one key to one life. Mine.
Did I get the tattoo in Egypt? No, weeks later it was inked in Split, Croatia. Now whenever I look at the imprint it makes me think of Egypt and that I have the key to my own life and no one else can take it from me.
