5 Questions Travelers Are Always Asked – Do You Agree?

You know when you have an interest and people know about it and you get those same questions over and over? Us travelers do. But for me at least, I don’t mind at all as I can’t talk enough about travel haha. These are the 5 main questions I get asked by others about my travel life..

1 – What is/was your favourite place (city/country etc)?

This is the most frequent question I get when I return from a trip, as most travelers can probably relate. It’s certainly a fair enough question and sometimes it can be easy to answer, and other times it’s like asking a parent who’s your favourite child. Like my last trip to South America – I visited Brazil, Colombia and Peru. I can’t choose which one was my favourite. I’d probably say Peru because I unexpectedly added it to my journey. BUT, I was in Rio for a week and celebrated carnival which was ah-maz-ing! Then I’d be dreaming to go to Colombia months before I visited and it met and exceeded my expectations. See, it’s hard to answer sometimes.

2 – Where are you off to next?

I would like to know myself! Sometimes us travelers already know while on a current trip where we will go next, other times we are looking for something different, cheap or iconic. This shows how much our friends and family know us when they ask us this question, thinking ‘where is this b**** going next!

3 – Who are you going with?

This question may not apply to you if you travel with a buddy, partner or with your family. But for me, I’m a wholehearted solo traveler. But I still get this question every time I say I’ve booked to go somewhere. It’s a generic question, just like if someone says ‘I went to a party last night‘ I would ask ‘how was it?‘. However, 99% of the time I answer ‘on my own’. Although on occasions I’ll meet up with friends (you gain them around the world after 37 countries, they are like family really).

4 – When’s your next trip?

A frequent one for me that everyone knows I want to give a definite answer. With a passion to travel, I’m always wanting to know when I’m going away. This is a standard question as I’m off gallivanting nearly every month to the same or different destinations, domestic or international.

5 – How do you afford to go on so many trips?

People ask this question yet I’m over here thinking ‘I wish I had more money!’  or that I had more annual leave. But I mean we are working hard behind the scene budgeting and researching on how to score a deal, work out some nitty gritties and get on that plane! My money doesn’t grow on trees. If you’ve read my Hello World post you’ll see I have two mortgages, I travel for work and keep a grip on my social life all on one income – there isn’t much left for a lavish $10,000 trip for a month.

What are common questions you get asked being a traveler? Or do you ask these questions to your friends and family? Comment below.

  1. This post made me chuckle, Tracey! Another thing people ask me is when is your next vacation – whereas for me it’s not really ever a holiday but content gathering non-stop! Taking photos, making notes of cool restaurants etc, yes it’s enjoyable but I never get time to lie on a beach 😉

  2. I get these questions ALL the time. Especially the how do you afford to travel one. A lot of people don’t realize how inexpensive travel is if you plan it right and stick to a budget. 😉 lol

    1. Hahaha, I totally agree! You can get some amazing deals and put time and research in and it doesn’t have to be that expensive!

  3. Hahaah thats exactly it! Unfortunately Ive come to dread getting those questions and now I try not to ask them to other travelers lol!

    1. Haha, aww. I bet you have, you would have been asked so many times! I do love asking travelers, as I love hearing stories.

  4. I can definitely relate to this!! We get asked ALL the time how we afford to travel so much!! And it’s almost a joke with our friends asking where we’re off to next! I really don’t mind so much either 🙂

    1. Yeah, I love talking about travel haha, so I don’t mind. Apart from who are you traveling with. I don’t like getting that one.

  5. I think the answer to the “what’s your favorite place” question is also so hard because it often depends on what season you go and who you go with!
I’d also like to add, “when are you coming home?” and “so when are you gonna settle down and like, get a real job?” haha the life of a traveling au pair!

  6. Haha yep, I definitely get these questions all the time, minus the “Who are you going with?” because all my friends know that I travel solo a lot, so they’ve just come to expect it. I actually HATE the “What’s your favorite place?” question because like you said, it’s impossible to choose one! It’s like comparing apples to oranges. Every place is so different and I like them for different reasons.

    1. Yesss! I travel solo all the time but somehow I always get asked each time. It is such a hard question with which is your favourite, ahhh! Lol.

  7. Spot on! Hahaha.. I guess the hardest question to answer will be: ‘where are you headed next?’ as the destination is often depending on a lot of factors. LOL.

  8. I get where you are going to next the most often!!! No one asks how we afford to travel though! But I’ve heard of this as the most common question.

  9. I seriously get asked these all the time, especially that last one! Thankfully at this point I kind of have my answers down to all of these so I can respond on autopilot 🙂 Another question I get asked pretty often is, “Have you ever been to X? What do you recommend there?” A lot of the time, I’ve never even been there!

    1. Hahaha, yes – I have it on autopilot with some of them too. That makes me laugh. That’s true! I do get those questions as well! Thanks, Kay!

  10. I can totally identify with this! Especially the first two questions – I get asked those ALL the time! I’m still surprisingly patient with answering them….or I try to be anyway! Another very common question I get (as I often travel alone) is – do you not get scared on your own/how do you cope with the loneliness?? Thanks for a great read!

    1. Yes, it’s crazy and I’m glad these questions are very similar for you and what you are asked haha. Thank you so much, Louise!

  11. I get asked #1 and #4 a lot haha but I don’t really mind. I think #5 is interesting because I wonder that for other people just out of curiosity not in a state of judging. I personally feel really proud of I find deals so I am more than happy to share any sales that I manage to snag!

    1. That’s very true about #5! I think that too. I work really really hard and it’s hard to judge why they are asking! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Crystal!! In Athens it is good to stay around the Plaka/Acropolis area. Or if you can get a good deal down by the water.
In Amsterdam go around the Vondelbuurt area. Don’t stay in the area of Red light district haha. When are you planning on going?

  12. each time i used to read smaller articles which as well clear their
motive, and that is also happening with this paragraph which I am reading here.
